Description
Near East, Seljuk Dynasty, ca. 11th century CE. A solid cast and engraved bronze lioness presenting an alert pose with an upright head and perky, pointed ears, standing squarely on her forelegs. The triangular form extending behind the torso was likely a support upon which a vessel rested. This fabulous lion was most likely a foot joined by two others to fully support a vessel, perhaps a cauldron or brazier. The meticulous detailing of the visage and intricately engraved decorations (perhaps kufic lettering) adorning the body demonstrate the expert technique practiced by ancient artisans of the Seljuk Dynasty. In addition to birds, lions were among of the most favored animals of the Near East, and this example with its beautifully curved silhouette, vivid details, and gorgeous green and russet patina is exceptional indeed! Custom, museum quality stand. Size: lion itself measures 3.25" L x 2.625" W x 4.5" H (8.3 cm x 6.7 cm x 11.4 cm); 4.625" H on stand.
