Description
Eastern Roman Empire, Byzantium, ca. 8th century CE. A lovely miniature bust carved from white limestone in high relief, depicting a male saint with upraised arms and hands pressed together in a prayerful gesture. The artist created a finely detailed visage with delicate facial features and a wavy coiffure and beard comprised of repeated sinuous striations. The pious saint dons in a flowing robe with sleeves of elegantly cascading drapery. A precious piece that demonstrates the rise of Christianity during the Byzantine Empire. Size: 1.5" W x 2.125" H (3.8 cm x 5.4 cm)
