Description
Ancient Near East, Byzantium, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. This is a small bone carving of a bearded saint wearing long robes and holding a cup. The carving is only on three sides of the bone, with the back uncarved and showing the structure of the bone's interior. The bone was carved by cutting it into appropriately sized blocks and then softening it with heat or by soaking it in a plant infusion. The surface would be evened out and shaped and then the bone hardened again and polished. Size: 1.6" W x 2.5" H (4.1 cm x 6.4 cm).
