Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Moche, ca. 700 to 800 CE. Stirrup vessel decorated with applied spotted deer figures, one on each side, standing in profile, slip painted in a bichrome finish of red and cream hues. The Moche were innovative ceramicists and used their pottery to represent myriad subjects, among them anthropomorphic forms such as deities, warriors, and rulers, vegetables and plants, zoomorphic forms such as camelids, felines, foxes, bats, monkeys, sea lions, as well as deer as we see in this example.
