Pre-Columbian, South Peru, ca. 125 to 250 CE. A Nazca ceramic kero rising from a round-bottomed base, its elegant silhoutte displaying a soft curve on the lower body. The surface decoration is organized into registers or horizontal bands from the base to the mouth. While some are relatively undecorated, only painted in solid colors, eg, the orange and deep chocolate brown bands at the bottom, from the mid-section we see trophy heads and above a band of more abstract repeated triangular faces, each with three dots representing eyes and mouth, all in hues of black and orange against a white ground. The Nazca culture is infamous for its beautiful polychrome pottery, and this piece is a fine example. Size: 4.75" W x 6.375" H (12.1 cm x 16.2 cm)
