Description
Costa Rican Warrior holding a trophy head (800-1400 AD)

This warrior brandishes an axe in one hand and a decapictated head in the other. Warriors of Pre-Colombian Costa Rica displayed their prowess on the battlefield by taking enemies' heads as trophies. The practice probably reflected increasing competition for land and resources between rival chiefdoms, and worked as a form of revenge sorcery for the trespasses of their enemies.
