Description
Russian enameled coronation cup, the Khodynka "cup of sorrows" features the Imperial double headed dragon crest and the crowned cyrillic cyphers representing the last Tsar, Nicholas II and the Tsarina Alexandra above the date 1896, surrounded by strap work below a gilt band, 4 1/2" ht. NOTE: These enameled tumblers were distributed along with food and commemorative scarves to people in Moscow on May 18, 1896 to commemorate the coronation of Nicholas II. Rumors that the cups contained a gold coin caused a panic and stampede which resulted in over one thousand being trampled to death. This became known as the "Khodynka Tragedy" and the Tsarina, Alexandra gave this cup its name "Cup of Sorrows". PROVENANCE: Cummings Collection
