Description
Two Russian enameled coronation cups known as the "Khodynka Cup of Sorrows", that were made for the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna in 1896. The cup bears the cyphers of Nicholas and Alexandra surrounded by a geometric pattern with the Romanov eagle on the opposite side. One cup with chips on edge of rim, otherwise very good condition; the second cup enameling chips on rim, edge of base, and having a small ding in side also causing chip on interior. Each measures 4"H x 3 3/4" diameter. Note that these cups were given to supporters on the Khodynka Field in Moscow on May 18 1896 along with food and other gifts - over 1/2 million were present to receive the gifts, which was larger than the field could accommodate. As rumors spread throughout the field that a gold coin was in the cup, a stampede erupted and over 1000 people were killed, hence the name the "Cup of Sorrow". Provenance: From a Rochester NY estate, name withheld by family.
