Spear and Mamie Spear photographed many of the stereoviews in another lot in this auction, Lot 269.] Several photos’ handwritten captions indicate that they were taken in 1889, at the Centennial celebration of Allegheny (mostly verso of 3rd leaf and both sides of 4th leaf). Includes “Centennial Celebration 1789-1889- President Harrison in first carriage near flag.” [Procession of horse-drawn wagons with spectators on either side of road, largely standing under American flags and similar decorations. Placed in loose is a leaf from The Cumberland News, Sep. 7, 1964, which reproduces Spear’s then 74-year old photograph and has a relevant article.] Paper clipped to the leaf is a handwritten letter, “Nov. 5, 1889. Miss Mamie Spear/ Cumberland, Md… Mrs. Harrison desires me to express her thanks for the photograph you kindly sent her./ Very truly yours/ A. B. Sanger.” (Executive Mansion [White House] stationery in orig envelope). At least 4 photos show a class of schoolchildren (verso of 7th to last leaf, recto of 6th to last leaf, and a cabinet card placed in loose). Black boy (maybe 4 or 5 years old, recto of 12th to last leaf, above a photo of the Union Street School).
