Description
[Stereoviews/West] Over 100 stereoviews photographed by Constant Meese in California. Inserted in lower portion of a few dozen images: “Bohemian Grove Cal., 1918.” The Bohemian Grove stereoviews are of the grounds used for an annual men’s camping retreat the Bohemian Club, including photos of tents, tables for dining, a redwood grove for sleeping, and a stage castle for the Club’s annual play. “This play is elaborately gotten up and has cost as high as $20,000 to produce. Inasmuch as the Bohemian Club has as its members, the highest talent in the dramatic and artistic art, you can imagine what such talent and $20,000 can produce.” (20,000 figure is on 3rd single-sided leaf of Meese’s TLS transmitting the stereoviews to Mrs. Muncaster and “W. C. Muncaster/ c/o Cumberland Steel Company” in Cumberland, MD). TLS is dated “San Francisco, Dalif./ April 3rd 1919.” Several other stereoviews have “Calaveras Grove Cal.,” inserted in image. Unlabeled stereoviews include mountainous landscape, a car being driven near a lake, a log bridge, etc. Some mildly toned. Very good to near fine. TLS is brittle, creased, tears to TLS.
