James McCabe (1748-1811)

James McCabe was the son of the famous watchmaker Patrick McCabe from Lurgan County in Ireland. James went to London in 1775 and opened a bell factory; later he focused on wristwatches, clocks and marine chronometers. After his death in 1811 the company went into the hands of his sons Thomas, Robert and James Jr. In 1879 operations ceased. The house of McCabe was known for the variety of clock designs and therefor gained international notoriety. Even today, the clocks of McCabe are highly sought after by collectors and fetch increasingly higher prices at auctions worldwide. (cko)
