Honoré Pons (1773-1851)

The watchmaker and inventor was born in 1773 in Paris as son of music instrument maker César Pons. He absolved his education as pupil of Antide Janvier and he quickly acquired a reputation as competent watchmaker. In 1803 he established his own business. Several years later, Pons was appointed by France’s Minister of the Interior, Jean-Baptiste de Nompère de Chamapgny, to halt the decline of the watchmaking industry in Saint-Nicholas d'Aliemont. With his help, some transformations and the formation of a guild, it was possible to reestablish the French watch industry and so manufacture and export of clock was saved. Over the years, the watchmaker was awarded several medals, e.g. he won two silver medals in 1819 and in 1834 a gold medal for his outstanding movements and escapements. Pons was furthermore appointed Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1819 and remained active within the watch industry until 1847.
