Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, late Nazca to early Wari (Huari) cultures, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A delightful and near choice pottery jar from the very end of the Nazca empire. Rounded base with straight chimney spout decorated in an almost humorous depiction of a human skull. Like many of the ancient Peruvian cultures, the Nazca loved to decapitate and flay human heads and would decorate them and hang them from their belts. Large rounded eye sockets, nasal passages and straight-line smile. A very whimisical example of the macabre! Size: 5.25" H (13.3 cm)

Provenance: Ex Boston, MA collection acquired before 1975
