Description
A GERMAN GOTHIC ARMOR, 19TH CENTURY, follower of Ernst Schmidt of Munich (German 19th Century), in the Late 15th century style, of dim steel, comprising sallet with one piece skull and long pointed tail and pivoted pointed tip visor, separate solid bevor, pivoted gorget of two plates front and rear, breast plate of three upward lapping plates, the outer plates each curving up to a central point with pierced finial above the skirt of three plates with cusped edges, separate solid piece tassets with central flute and cusped edges, waisted and ribbed back plate and culet of four lames, all with cusped and pierced edges, pauldrons each of four plates, vambraces with turning joints and large ribbed cowters, and pointed cuff finger gauntlets, leg harness each with long cuisse with hinged side plates above poleyns with two plates above and below, all decorated en suite, plain greave, and pointed laminated sabaton, on a partially clothed standing male mannequin, with painted facial features, mounted on a rectangular velvet covered plywood base and kept upright with the use of a steel rod reinforcing from behind. Condition
The armor with various condition issues, including breaks, cracks, and fractures in the plate. Missing bolts, fingers, and rusted overall. Leather belt straps corroded, many plates held in place with the help of modern wires that have been tied and twisted variously throughout the set. The wood and tasseled undergarments worn by the mannequin are stained and faded. The head and face of the mannequin in disrepair, with chips, cracks, and discoloration. The velvet covered platform completely faded. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
