Description
A PRE-COLUMBIAN POTTERY POLYCHROME CYLINDER VESSEL, MAYAN, LOWLANDS, LATE CLASSIC PERIOD, 550 A.D.- 950 A.D., enameled with a seated lord on each side, leaning forward, left arm outstretched and right hand raised in a gesturing motion, wearing a spotted sash loincloth tied at the back, headdress with streaming plumes, adorned with bracelets, a large beaded jade necklace with counterweight falling down the back and large ear spools, separated by two sets of glyphs, in black, dark and pale orange against a creamy ground, and with chevron patterned band along the base and rim. Height: 5 3/4" Diameter: 7" NOTE: This style of decorated ceramics by the Maya is most commonly associated by the Late Classic Period. This period is most commonly identified by the use of primary and secondary colors on a single piece, and the level of sophistication and craftsmanship the pieces were painted with.
Condition
In relatively good condition. The vessel has been reconstructed from roughly 14 pieces. Majority of the paint is still intact. Patina is very good.
