Description
Pre-Columbian, Colombia or Venezuela, Tairona, ca. 800 CE. Rare blackware pottery jar in the form of a rotund human. He holds his short arms at his girthy sides, wearing a long necklace, a large labret in his lower lip, and a serpentine headdress. Facing the viewer with coffee bean shaped, lashed eyes and a gentle smile, he has a large wad of coca leaves in his left cheek. The anthropomorphic vessel rises from a concave circular foot which is perforated at opposite sides, presumably for suspension or attachment. A fine and unusual vessel! Size: 5.375" H (13.7 cm)
