Condition:

The paint surface has scattered areas of craquelure, especially in the sky. The canvas is slightly wavy due to creases within the canvas. There are a number of scattered losses of paint and the paint surface has detached from the canvas in some parts. The depiction also shows a number of smaller stains. The form of the stretcher is slightly pressed through the canvas. It measures 73.5 x 99.5 cm and the frame 96 x 122 cm.



Karl Kaufmann (1843-1901/05)

Karl Kaufmann started his artistic education at the Academy of Arts in Vienna. He subsequently travelled through European countries, such as Norway, the Netherlands, Germany or Italy. Kaufmann developed a sensitive feeling for environments and atmospheres, which helped him to specialize in landscape and architectural painting. One special feature of his oeuvre is the habit to sign his works with pseudonyms. For instance, the names B. Lambert, Charles Marchand, C. Charpentier, J. Holmstedt or Ch. Laarsen are well-known signatures by Kaufmann. The majority of his works belongs to private collections, today. (cbo)
