Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, Khmer empire, ca. 15th century CE. A beautiful brown-glazed stoneware vase-shaped ewer with twin, diminutive handles created during the reign of the Khmer empire. Stoneware was first created in Cambodia just after the year 800 CE, when the Khmer empire was initially established. Stoneware production was primarily located in the Angkor region which was the center of the Khmer empire. Most stoneware pieces boasting this iron-rich brown glaze, however, have been excavated in northeast Thailand which was an outer province at the time. This piece shows nice wheel markings up the body and attractive crackling in the glaze. Size: 3.5" in diameter x 5.5" H (8.9 cm x 14 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Paul and Louise Bernheimer, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA, acquired before 1980.
