Follower of Cristofano dell Altissimo (1552 - 1605), Oil on panel portrait of Cardinal Alamannus Adimarius with name inscribed in Latin across top. Framed in elaborate black carved wooden frame with the back having a wood latticework on reverse side of panel. Plaque on frame attributes painting to Vincenza di Catena (Italy 1470-1531). Three older labels or partial labels, likely from previous owners, en verso. Cristonfano dell'Altissimo was a Italian artist who was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1552 to copy at least 280 of the portraits from the Collection of Paolo Giovio. He spent 37 years copying the portraits, completing the work in 1589; they have been exhibited in the First Corridor of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, ever since. Sight: 26" H x 20" W. 1 1/2" surface scratch to left cheek of sitter. Varnish layer radial scratch near hood area and back of head (does not appear to penetrate to the paint layer). Blacklight photo reveals some inpainting/restoration upper right corner and margin, also to lower margin. Age crack to upper right corner/margin. Age crack to mid-center of robe. Indention of painted panel at lower center margin. Losses to black lacquer on liner of frame. Minor chips/ abrasions to frame. Please refer to blacklight photos. The back of the panel appears to have been sanded to allow for the installation of cradling in the 20th century. Cross section of panel shows age.
