Description
A nice Apulian Gnathia-Ware epichysis, Magnia Graecia, c. 350 - 320 BC, the body spool-shaped with narrow neck and spout, the sides with a molded lion head boss, the handle tall and elegant. The vessel is decorated with grape, tendrils, bands pellets and rays around the base of the beck, all in red. white and yellow-orange slip. Cymatium adorns the rim and a Meander band decorates the body bordered by double lines. H: 17 cm. Break involving handle and neck re-attached, chipping to foot. A lovely example and was used mainly for pouring oil. Ex South London private collection.
