Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, ca. 200 to 500 CE. This is the pottery head of a person with their face painted black wearing a coyote head mask; the piece has a hollow neck and was clearly removed from something larger. The coyote has large painted eyes, a painted nose, and detailed teeth. The coyote is a powerful symbol throughout the Americas, often as a trickster figure. Custom stand. Size: 3-1/4"H x 2-1/4" x 2-1/2".
Provenance: Ex-private Olan collection, California, by family descent, acquired 1960 to 1970.

Condition
Some patina and wear but artwork is clear; the piece was broken off of something larger. The lower jaw of the mask and the coyote's canines have been broken off and are missing.
