Description
Rome, ca. 100 CE. This is a well formed bronze fibula, or brooch pin, one of the most common fasteners for clothing in the Roman world. It was gilded, which is the use of the largely inert element gold as a thin coating to try to prevent corrosion to bronze. The level of gilding on this piece is truly impressive. Size: 1.9" L x 1.4" W (4.8 cm x 3.6 cm).
