Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, ca. 600 to 900 CE. An impressive standing pottery warrior figure holding a disc-shaped shield, carved with intricate depiction of a crouching human figure donning a bird mask in low relief in his upraised left hand, a low feather trail below the shield. The figure is wearing a helmet that is both protective and decorative with its feathered crest as well as a heavy armor belt with a large frontal loincloth. Size: 6-1/8"H.
Provenance: Ex-private R. Pearson collection, Denver, CO, acquired from Arte Primitivo; ex-Estate of Andrea Bolt.

Missing right hand. Arms, head, and shield rettached with breaklines visible. Shield repaired from two original pieces and has 1" and a 1/4" rim restoration. Old oil darkened surface.
