Item Details
Description
Rome, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. An exquisitely carved white marble head depicting Aphrodite/Venus, the goddess of romantic love who magically rose from the sea on a giant scallop, with her head ever so slightly tipped to the left, her coiffure parted at the center and swept back with long, wavy locks delineated and arranged in a chignon at the nape of her neck and crowned with a grand diadem. Her beautiful oval face is sensitively modeled so as to attain a naturalistic visage for the goddess with her rounded forehead, large almond-shaped eyes with thick upper lids, thin brows that arch gracefully and merge with the bridge of her nose, rounded chin, and bow shaped pursed lips. A breathtaking representation of the goddess who possessed such sublime beauty that she inspired much rivalry among the gods, not to mention countless representations in visual culture, among the most famous, Attic sculptor Praxitele's "Aphrodite of Knidos" (ca. 360-330 BCE) and Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli's "Birth of Venus" (1484-86). Custom, museum quality stand. Size: 8-3/4" H x 6-3/4" deep x 5-7/8" W (22.2 x 17.1 x 14.9 cm); 12-1/2" high on stand.

A similar example hammered at $410,500 at Christie's, New York, 9 December 2010, Sale 2364, Lot 150.

Provenance: Ex-private collection of Mr. William Froelich, New York, purchased in 1975.
