Framed to the artist’s specification. Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto is also an accomplished architect. His photographs capture the pristine essence of each subject, whether architectural, sculptural, painterly, or of the natural world. The series Mechanical Forms comprises looming singular images of mechanical models manufactured in England in 1870s. These models were used to demonstrate basic movements of modern machines. Sugimoto was inspired by the sophisticated beauty he saw in these objects originally created for a purely functional purpose.
Sugimoto has exhibited in major museums and galleries worldwide, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. He lives and works in New York and Tokyo.
