Description
Robert Morris Autograph Letter Signed. One page with integral address leaf, 7.5" x 9.25", Philadelphia, April 24, 1800. Addressed to his son-in-law, Charles Croxall, Founding Father Robert Morris, who was at the time incarcerated in Prune Street prison in Philadelphia for debt, writes regarding the transfer of his possessions, in part: "I have this morning drawn and executed an assignment of all my right in the . . . furniture &c to R Morris junr . . . in Trust to keep the same to the use of your wife [Morris' daughter] and to be sold & the money divided amongst her children on her death The assignment is enclosed herewith and you are to deliver it to Mr Woodruff who has the former deed of Trust." Morris was set free in 1801 following the United States' passing of the Bankruptcy Act of 1800, a temporary piece of legislation intended to get Morris out of prison. Affixed to a larger sheet at the top half to an overall size of 8.25" x 10.75". With a 9.75" x 13.5" engraved portrait bearing a facsimile signature.

Condition: Part of the integral address leaf is present. The letter is fragile with long separations at the folds and bits of paper loss thereat. Spots of minor staining do not affect the text.
