Robert Morris Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 8" x 10", n.p., October 17, 1799. Addressed to Thomas Fitzsimons, a former member of both the Continental and U.S. Congresses, Morris writes, in full: "I have taken a Copy of the enclosed Copy of Miss LeRoy and others bill in chancery and I will write the heads of an answer ready for our Counsel to put into proper form. In the meantime, an appearance should be entered in the Chancery Court of New York." When he wrote this letter, Morris was serving time in Prune Street prison in Philadelphia for debt. He was released in 1801 following the United States' passing of the Bankruptcy Act of 1800, a temporary piece of legislation intended to get Morris out of prison.
