Description
A woman's black velvet hood (Gargush), Sana'a, Yemen, early 20th century, adorned with seed pearls, filigree medallions and assorted coins including 18th century Maria Theresa and Charles Austrian talers, 49cm long; together with two striped satin hoods for girls, heavily embroidered in silver thread, late 19th century, 24cm, 9 1/2in (3)
Condition
• Black velvet ground is 20th century however the beaded and braided edgings/coins are all antique. Lined in purple and black rayon. Seed pearls centre front are slightly larger and are probably replacements. Braid is slightly detached centre front.
• Purple and black striped cape – threads are tarnished, floating threads and wear on lower edges.
• Brown and yellow striped – embroidered is worn and tarnished. Interior is stained. Only one strap with pendants, one is missing. Centre back seam needs re-stitching
