Description
James E. Allen (1894-1964) was an important American printmaker famous for his etchings and lithographs that documented the American worker and the American industry of the 1930s. Title: Teeming Ingots. Etching, 1935. 11-7/8 x 9-7/8 inches image plus margins. Edition of approximately 100. Signed in pencil, lower right. Published by the Society of American Etchers, New York. A superb, dark impression. Contained in the original Society of American Etchers mat and frame, not examined out of the frame. We assume that there is matburn under the old mat. John Taylor Arms described this etching as "Dramatic in content, and powerful yet sensitive in execution, it is a brilliant example of the author's well-formed but fluent style...a print which, in its soundness, its spontaneity, and the subtlety of its handling, ranks with the best work of a highly accomplished artist destined, we believe, to leave an enduring name in the annals of contemporary graphic art." A word about the scans used here: #1 shows this print which is in the collection of the Metropolitan Art Museum. The other photos are of the etching we are offering here but as you can see the print is difficult to picture because it is framed. Ink is black, paper is white or what some would call ivory.
