Description
A marvelous American Folk Art cane from the Barenholtz Collection. (The American Folk Art Collection of Bernard Barenholtz gathered over 30 years, was sold by Sothebys in 1990. The consignor purchased this piece at that time.) Made of a single piece of hardwood, it has a simple round handle that is about 7/8" in diameter. Carved in relief down the entire shaft are various animals and faces. Each has tiny glass or beaded eyes and the carving is very finely fashioned. There is an American Eagle, a monkey, a running hound and a running rabbit, numerous faces including African Americans and others, rams, other dogs, owls, a bear, a squirrel, birds, a fox and many other images. Although the carver is unknown, he demonstrated the high amateur skill that is the essence of fine folk art. The piece terminates with a 2 1/2" burnished brass ferrule with an attached Sotheby"â„¢s sticker that says: "Barenholtz Collection". It is staff length at 40 3/4" and the condition is very good with evidence of minor age crack stabilization present. This fine piece comes to us from the collection of Dr. Renzo Traballesi. Estimate: $2000-$3000.
