Description
A great cannon cheroot gun cane curio. The brass handle is 2" high and 4 1/4" long. It is fashioned as an early cannon mounted on a decorated capstan. There is a tiny touchhole on top for ignition and it is capable of firing a small pellet. (Legend has it that gamblers in America"â„¢s early West carried such canes and if accused of card cheating, could ignite the cannon with a lit cheroot, for self-defense. Hence the sobriquet: "Cheroot Cane".) The shaft is dark walnut that ends with a 1 1/4" white metal and iron ferrule. The overall length is 35" and the condition is excellent. It is probably American, ca 1880, and it is a wonderful example of the type. Estimate: $1200-$1800.
