Description
Second Quarter 19th Century. By repute previously one of Daniel Websters walking sticks. The bone handle whimsically carved in relief with the head of a hound, wearing a knotted scarf and hat, above a gilt metal basket-weave collar, on a grain decorated malacca shaft, with bone ferrule. (Cond: good, some minor surface abrasions)

Daniel Webster, (1782-1852) renowned American orator and politician, aligned with a Federalist party affiliation, Webster practiced prominently as a lawyer, before the U.S. Supreme Court, he then served in the U.S. Congress and U.S. Senate and was later appointed Secretary of State from 1841 to 1843, and again from 1850 to 1852. He is best known as an enthusiastic nationalist and advocate for business interests during the period of the Jacksonian agrarianism under presidents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, and Millard Fillmore.
