Chris Ofili (British, b. 1968)
Turner Prize-winning painter Chris Ofili is best known for his vibrant works examining the contemporary black experience. Drawing upon an array of historical and cultural sources ranging from cave paintings to comic books, Ofili incorporates a myriad of materials including glitter, resin and, perhaps most famously, elephant dung. A member of the Young British Artists, Ofili studied at the Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. In 1998, Ofili was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize and, the following year, generated praise at the Brooklyn Museum. In 2003, he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale. Ofili’s works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Art, and the Tate Gallery and Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Ofili currently lives and works in Trinidad.
