Afro Basaldella (1912-1976)
The Italian artist was born in Udine, near Venice in 1912. He studied Art in Florence and Venice and received his diploma in 1931. In 1932 he went to Milan where he moved into a studio with his brother Mirko. His first solo exhibition was held in Rome in 1937 at the Galleria della Cometa. The National Gallery of Modern Art purchased one of his works at that exhibition. In 1938 he took part in the Venice Biennial. As off 1952 he was part of the Italian artist group ‘degli Otto’. In 1955 his works were exhibited in New York. In the same year he took part in the first documenta in Kassel. He was granted the prize best Italian artist 1956 on the der XXVII. Biennale in Venice. 1958 he painted a wall painting with Picasso, Arp and Miró for the UNESCO building in Paris. He also took part at the second documenta in the year 1959. His work ‘L’isola del Giglio’ won the Guggenheim prize in Rome in 1960. 1971 he got in Rome the ‘Premio nazionale di pittura Presidente della Repubblica’. His works are parts of renowned collections, such as the Modern Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery for Modern Art in Rome and the Cleveland Museum of Art. (fea)
