Turner Prize-winning artist Chris Ofili is best known for his vibrant mixed-media paintings which simultaneously mock and celebrate the representation of the female throughout art history. Between the years of 1995 and 2005, Ofili created 181 watercolor portraits of women, including this richly designed lot. Of his interest in the female form, Ofili has stated: “I try to do things with the female form: one, describe its beauty; two, look at the way it's been dealt with historically; and three, cause more problems. I think I'm actively doing all three.” (C. Ofili, quoted in Chris Ofili, New York 2009, p. 249). Ofili recently made headlines for his controversial “The Holy Virgin Mary” painting which fetched 2,882,500 GBP (4,532,945 USD) at Christie’s London this past June.
