Yvonne Jacquette (American, b. 1934)
Yvonne Jacquette was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and grew up in Stamford, Connecticut. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence from 1952 until 1955 when she moved to New York City. It was during a flight to San Diego in 1969 that inspired Jacquette to depict aerial views, which led to numerous flights in commercial airliners to study cloud formations and weather patterns used in her artwork. It is these aerial views of landscapes that typify her work. She has not only been interested in portraying these landscapes during different times of the day, but also exploring the effects of bright lights, reflections and indistinct objects surrounded by darkness as one would see from a plane. Apart from other cities in the United States, New York City has had a special focus in Jacquette’s work: in the 1980s and 1990s, she chartered planes from Teterborough Airport in New Jersey to circumnavigate the city while she sketched the view below. She has also worked from atop the Empire State Building, an enclosed deck at the World Trade Center and from empty offices. Today, Jacquette’s work can be viewed in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum in New York, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Pennsylvania.
