Carroll Dunham (American, b. 1949)
Best known for his playful imagery of erotic and brightly colored figures, Carroll Dunham was inspired by Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. His depictions of the body are influenced by the works of Brice Marden, Robert Mangold and Robert Ryman. Dunham’s work often features recurring motifs, including waves, genitalia, teeth and tongues. His most recent works have focused on cartoon-like figures and nudes. Dunham participated in the Whitney Biennials of 1985, 1991, and 1995. His work is held in the permanent collections of several museums, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. The artist currently lives and works in New York.
