Description
91. Ivory Biblical Cane of “The Massacre of the Innocents at Bethlehem”-Ca. 1870-Ivory ball knob carved with geometrical patterns and its plain silver collar with “STERLING” hallmark on a hardwood shaft embellished with metal wire inlay over its entire length and a horn ferrule. The hinged ball unfolds to reveal two detailed scenes with depicting Herod and the massacre of the children. While the remarkable detailed and vibrant carving of the panels is perfectly conserved, the outside of the knob is endorsed by the appropriate antique note and suitable wear. So far unrecorded in the widespread cane repertoire, this cane makes a personal appointment with the Passover Seeder and is a great conversations object, easily awakening the interest of every interlocutor.-H. 2 ¼” diameter, O.L. 36 ¾”-$1,000-$1,500
