Description
Ptolemaic Period, 332-30 BC. A composition amulet of the dwarf god Pataikos, standing upright in frontal pose; the legs short and bowed, belly round and protruding, arms held at the sides, feet absent; to the reverse an integral loop for suspension. 6.76 grams, 41mm (1 1/2"). Formerly the property of a Mayfair gentleman, acquired 1980s. Pataikos is one of the many minor protective deities that were commonly depicted as amulets and that were commonly worn during life and death. He is always shown naked and sometimes standing on crocodiles and brandishing snakes or knives. He is strongly associated with Horus-the-Saviour and is sometimes flanked by Isis and Nepthys. The name Pataikos comes from a passage in Herodotus describing Phoenician dwarf images that were used for protection.
