Description
First Edition of Impressions of Theophrastus Such by George Eliot. Affixed at the beginning of the book is an Autographed Letter, Signed by George Eliot with the name Mary Ann Lewes, her birth name and the last name of her partner. It thanks Harper Bros. for their advance of £50 for Theophrastus Such. It is dated June of 1879 on Eliot's letterhead from The Heights. Lewes is the surname of George Henry Lewes, Eliot's long-time life partner. Eliot's birth name was Mary Ann Evans and in addition to using the name George Eliot, she also signed her name Mary Ann Lewes. Following the letter is the envelope it was sent in. Very rare indeed! The letter has a light crease across the middle, as it would have been folded to go into the envelope, which would have traveled from England to the US offices of Harper in New York. The book itself is in overall good condition with some spine wear. The letter has a very light yellow toning that extends to within about 3/4" of the right side of the letter, likely from the newspaper article that was in the book laying over the letter for many years. Shipping 20.
