Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Coast Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. One of the most unusual examples of Colima pottery flutes - or pottery pieces we have ever seen! Pottery animal form flute covered in deep red slip in an animal form that resembles a frog when oriented in one direction, and a mammalian (possibly a coati) with extended ears, raised nose and small mouth which acts as the mouth-piece. A series of small incised connected circles completes this amazing piece. And, the sound that comes from this is incredible. It very closely resembles the hooting of an owl with a deep baritone tone. 4 holes to change the pitch and twin suspension holes. Incredible! Size: 5"L x 3-3/8"W x 3-1/4"H.

Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
