Item Details
Description
1st-4th century AD. A fragment of a carved steatite frieze depicting a winged atlant supporting a column with triangular ornament; to the right three small nude worshippers in cells, further figures in the outer zone; to the left of the column, nimbate Buddha flanked by robed attendants in two columns, pediment above. 5.6 kg, 41cm (16"). Private collection, Cambridgeshire, UK; acquired prior to 2000. The scene possibly relates to one of the Jataka tales which is a voluminous work concerning the previous lives of the Buddha prior to reincarnation as Siddharta Gautama. All of the stories exhibit virtue and correct behaviour that eventually led to the future Buddha being born into a life that led to his enlightenment. [No Reserve]
