Description
1st-3rd century AD. A carved schist frieze fragment displaying a central facing figure and surrounding figural friezes; the central figure of Buddha sitting cross-legged on a lotus flower dais, hands held to the chest, within a decorative arch; flanking arcade with two standing bodhisattvas each within a portal with animal-headed columns; above, two tiers of nimbate attendants or worshippers in various sitting poses; below, a frieze of facing Atlas figures, robed nimbate devotees and others; the sculpture skilfully executed with deep undercuts and fine modelling. 50 kg, 70.5cm (27 3/4"). Property of a London collector, acquired early 1990s.
