3rd-4th century AD. A carved schist frieze fragment with a mare drinking from a bowl and suckling her foal, second horse to the rear, two attendants filling the bowl from a pitcher; mounted on a custom-made stand. See Jongeward, D. Buddhist Art of Gandhara in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, 2018. 1.7 kg total, 23.5cm including stand (9 1/4"). Property of a North London gentleman; ex private London collection, acquired 1980-1990s.
