Description
1st-4th century AD. A carved steatite frieze fragment depicting a seated female figure in loosely draped robe and piled hairstyle holding a cornucopia in her left hand; beside her, a seated male in short tunic; foliage to the rounded bases; mounted on a custom-made stand. 1.4 kg, 21.5cm including stand (8 1/2"). Private collection, Cambridgeshire, UK; acquired prior to 2000. The figures display very strong Graeco-Roman influence in the treatment of the faces and the rendering of the clothes and particularly the cornucopia held by the goddess. The seated female figure is the goddess Hariti, protector of children and women in childbirth. The male figure is Pancika, the consort of Hariti and chief of the nature spirits. Together they illustrated marital love following the intervention of the Buddha. [No Reserve]
