Description
William Langley (United Kingdom, 1852 - 1922) oil on canvas marine painting depicting figures in two sailing vessels and a rowboat, being tossed on choppy waves. Signed lower right, "William Langley". Housed in a contemporary gilt and painted wooden frame. Sight - 15 1/4" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed - 18 1/2" H x 21 1/2" W. Provenance: Property of the Birmingham Museum of Art. Biography (Courtesy of AskArt: The Artists' Bluebook): William Langley appears to have mainly painted landscapes, Highland cattle, and beach scenes, but little is known about his life. He is mentioned in Hidden Talents: A dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950 by Jeremy Wood (published 1994); Wood writes of some landscape paintings signed William Langley that "The work shows a distinct similarity to that of several artists working at the time and the signature could possibly be a pseudonym."
Condition
Overall very good condition with a few small scattered spots to the upper left sky area possibly inpainted or cleaned. Minor craquelure. Likely relined.
