Description
Jean Joseph Delvin (Belgium, 1853 - 1922) oil on canvas seashore scene depicting a woman in Edwardian dress seated on horseback, standing at the edge of the water and gazing out toward sailing vessels on the horizon. Signed and dated "Delvin, 18?8" lower left. Housed in a carved gilt wood frame with painted wooden liner. Sight - 30 1/2" H x 43 1/4" W. Framed - 41" H x 53 1/2" W. Biography: Jean-Joseph Delvin attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, studying under Theodore Joseph Canneel. He eventually taught at the academy and became its director from 1902-1913. He specialized in animal scenes , particularly ones with horses. Provenance: descended in the family of in-vitro fertilization pioneer Dr. Pierre Soupart of Hainaut, Belgium, who came with his family to this country in 1962 and became a member of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Vanderbilt University Medical School, where he worked for the rest of his life.
