Description
William Langley (United Kingdom, 1852 - 1922) oil on canvas marine painting depicting a sailing vessel tethered near shore while other vessels are sailing in the background. Signed lower right, "William Langley". Housed in a contemporary gilt and painted wooden frame. Sight - 15 3/8" H x 23 1/2" W. Framed - 22" h x 29 3/4" W. Provenance: Property of the Birmingham Museum of Art. Biography (Courtesy of AskArt: The Artists' Bluebook): William Langley appears to have mainly painted landscapes, Highland cattle, and beach scenes, but little is known about his life. He is mentioned in Hidden Talents: A dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950 by Jeremy Wood (published 1994); Wood writes of some landscape paintings signed William Langley that "The work shows a distinct similarity to that of several artists working at the time and the signature could possibly be a pseudonym."
Condition
Overall very good condition with possible inpainting to a few small spots on lower left and right edges and in sky. A few spots in the sky fluoresce a lighter color, possibly indicating a varnish issue. Minor craquelure. Likely relined.
