Ancient Near East, Syria, Syro-Hittite, 2750 BCE to 1900 BCE. A superb Syro-Hittite pillar figurine with characteristically mysterious eyes and an almost bird-like presence. At the same time, this sweet lady possesses a monolithic body with hands positioned just beneath her breasts. Syro-Hittite pillar figurines are a form of statuary made in tribute to these ancient culture’s gods and goddesses. These figurines are found throughout the region, yet few are of this high quality. This particular example boasts unique features, such as a magnificent headdress and necklace. As ancient as this piece is, it is in remarkable condition and continues to inspire awe with its mysterious yet familiar characteristics. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: figurine itself measures 5-5/8" (14.3 cm).
