Description
"OLD BETS" - SIOUX CARE GIVER OF ST. PAUL
"Berry Picker" ("Azayamankawin"), a Sioux Indian who later became known as “Old Betsey” or “Old Bets”. The gentle woman was well known to white soldiers and settlers, “not only for her beauty, but for her kind disposition as well as for her bravery”, and was known for her efforts to nurse the sick children of army officers stationed at Fort Snelling. Rare carte de visite photograph of the Sioux lady in traditional garb, backstamp by A. H. Rose, St. Paul. Very good.
